PCPB Collaborates with County Governments in Gatekeeping

Pest control and Products Board will partner with county governments to form Sprays service providers in a bid to control usage of banned pesticides which are risky to health of kenyans.

The Pest oversight watchdog has embarked on training of trainers who will be deployed at the grassroots level to make sure that only the legit pest control products are used by the farmers.

These people are known as SPRAYS SERVICE PROVIDERS and they will be tasked with the responsibility of using the pest control products that have been given the greenlight and that they won’t use any product that has been flagged in the country.

 This follows an increase in cancer cases in the country that has been partially contributed by some Kenyans using some pest control products that can be detrimental to health.

Speaking after a meeting with ministry of agriculture officials from Embu and Kirinyaga PCPB chairman Mr. Njoroge Kagwe said the will liaise with county governments in the roll out of that program.

The chairman said many farmers have been lacking the requisite skill and know-how pertaining safe use of pesticides.

On her part The Chief Executive Officer of Pest Control and Products Board Dr. Esther Kimani said the use of unauthorized pest control products has been a big blow and a contributor to ban of export produce especially horticultural crops.

Dr. Kimani added that the trainees will be pivotal in passing the correct information to the farmers and that the Mount Kenya region has been hit hard by unregulated pest control products.

She also urged farmers to use the recommended pest control products for the correct crops.
