Dockworkers Union [DWU] secretary general Simon Sang is up in arms against Kenya  Ports Authority’s [KPA] human resource division for mishandling workers’ medical scheme.

He acknowledged the implementation of the medical scheme for the port workers was on a pilot basis.

“We had agreed to have a trial for six months based on a review of the same,” he pointed out.

Sang said it was agreed there was going to be a pilot of the controversial medical scheme for another six months.

He was speaking to journalists at the DWU headquarters along Jomo Kenyatta Avenue in Mombasa  County.

The DWU secretary general said instead the management came up with an arrangement which is inhuman.

Sang, who was flanked by the entire DWU executive committee, pointed out that the state corporation has come up with an arrangement that if one has gone beyond the limited amount he would be transferred to an inferior medical facility.

Dockworkers Union [DWU] secretary general Simon Sang addressing the media at the DWU headquarters along Jomo Kenyatta Avenue in Mombasa County.

He said it was regrettable they have lost one member who was removed from an intensive care unit (ICU) and transferred to the coast general teaching and referral hospital.

“The bottom line is that this is a case of mishandling of the medical scheme by the corporation,” he pointed out.

The DWU secretary general added that a similar incident occurred when a worker was forced to spend the night at his home after he was removed from a hospital’s intensive care unit.

Sang told journalists they have issued a 21 day ultimatum to the authority to take disciplinary action against three senior officers at the human resource division.

He threated that failure by the authority to meet the deadline will result in weekly demonstrations in the county.

“The three officers lack human values and they are a burden to the authority and to the government at large,” he said.
