Six individuals arrested in connection with the fatal shooting of a police officer during a patrol in the Freehold area of Nakuru town will be held for the next 30 days to allow investigators to complete crucial inquiries.

The suspects, presented before the court on Tuesday, face no formal charges yet but are being detained as the investigation unfolds.

The tragic incident occurred on Sunday night when the officer was ambushed alongside two colleagues. The officer was fatally shot, while the other two sustained injuries. Following their arrest, the suspects reportedly led police to the recovery of an AK-47 rifle believed to be the murder weapon.

Authorities also seized four mobile phones, assorted SIM cards, bus tickets, and a motorcycle from the group, as detailed in a report from Bondeni Police Station.

Principal Magistrate Vincent Adet granted the 30-day detention order after reviewing the investigation officer’s submissions.

The magistrate noted the compelling reasons behind the request, emphasizing the need for comprehensive ballistic examinations, parade identifications, mental assessments, and the gathering of witness statements.

“The reasons advanced by the investigation officer to hold the suspects are compelling and necessary to ensure a thorough inquiry,” he stated.

The suspects named are John Njau Ndungu, Chacha Peter Marwa, William Nyahili Rioba, Emmanuel Muita Muita, Nyahili Nyamuhaga Magige, and Catherine Nkatha Zakayo. Notably, all but Catherine Nkatha did not object to the detention orders.

As the investigation progresses, law enforcement officials continue to piece together the events that led to this brutal attack on officers serving to protect the community.

The extended detention will provide critical time to ensure all forensic and testimonial evidence is meticulously gathered, bringing hope for justice for the fallen officer and his family.

The case has drawn widespread attention, highlighting the dangers faced by police officers on duty and underscoring the urgent need for enhanced security measures in vulnerable areas. The community now watches closely as the wheels of justice move forward.
