Harambee Stars wins

Kenya announced their arrival on the continental stage in style, edging past two-time champions DR Congo 1-0 in a gripping Group A opener at the TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN).
A solitary strike from Austin Odhiambo in first-half stoppage time was enough to seal the win, sending a capacity crowd of 60,000 into raptures and marking a dream start to the hosts’ first-ever CHAN finals appearance.
The opening minutes were tense for Kenya, with DR Congo looking to stamp their authority early. The visitors thought they had broken the deadlock in the 5th minute through Jephté Kitambala, but the goal was chalked off after a VAR review ruled him offside.
Buoyed by the deafening roar of the home fans, Kenya grew in confidence, defending resolutely and waiting for their moment. That moment came just before halftime when David Sakwa split the Congolese defence with a precise pass, allowing Odhiambo to slot home with his left foot past goalkeeper Brudel Efonge.
The second half saw DR Congo pile on the pressure, particularly from set-pieces. Headers from Jonathan Mokonzi and Kitambala tested Kenya’s backline, but the hosts stood firm to secure a famous victory.
The result not only hands Kenya three precious points but also serves as a statement to the rest of the competition: the debutants are here to compete.
