Kileleshwa Member of County Assembly (MCA) Robert Alai has cautioned the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) faction led by Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna following their successful Linda Mwananchi rally in Kitengela, Kajiado County.
Taking to his official X account on Monday, February 16, 2026, Alai criticised the Sifuna-led team for flaunting large crowds, arguing that political rallies do not necessarily translate into electoral victory.
“Don’t scare us with crowds. Raila gave us the biggest crowds for 5 elections,” Alai posted. He added that if crowd size determined presidential success, the late ODM leader Raila Odinga would have become president multiple times. “If crowds made anyone President, Raila would be President 5 times. Mtajua hamjui!” he wrote.
The remarks came a day after Sifuna and his allies held a major Linda Mwananchi rally in Kitengela on Sunday, February 15, 2026. The event attracted thousands of supporters, many of them young people, who filled the town to hear from the ODM leaders.
Sifuna, who was recently ousted as ODM Secretary General but maintains he still holds the position, used the rally to condemn what he termed as efforts to silence dissent within the party. He was joined by Embakasi East MP Babu Owino, Siaya Governor James Orengo, Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi, Saboti MP Caleb Amisi, and Suba South MP Caroli Omondi.
The rally, however, ended abruptly after police officers lobbed teargas canisters into the crowd, dispersing attendees.
Teargas smoke engulfed the area as videos circulating online showed supporters fleeing in panic. Reports indicated that police also fired shots in the air and damaged the sound system and dais, bringing the event to a chaotic close.
