Senate Committee to Investigate Alleged Graft at Kano

The Senate Committee on Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, Chaired by James Murango, met with Pastor Patrick Ochieng, a farmer from the West Kano Irrigation Scheme, over alleged graft.

Dealings at the scheme situated in Kisumu County drew the attention of the Committee on possible graft, which has generated Tensions.

The alleged embezzlement of funds happened under the watch of the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission.

Pastor Patrick pleaded with the Committee to carry out a thorough Financial Inspection of the Scheme between 2007 – 2021 and further conduct an Audit of the Scheme since Inception.

The Committee resolved on intervening to unlock the West Kano Irrigation Scheme Investigation Process so as to address the legislative gaps and help the Farmers of West Kano Irrigation Scheme.

On the Committee’s second Agenda, it considered and approved a legislative proposal on the Coffee Bill, 2023, which is sponsored by the Committee. The Bill provides for the establishment of the Coffee Board of Kenya, and the Coffee Research Institute; to provide for the role of the National and the County Governments; provide for the Regulation, Development and Promotion of the Coffee Industry; and for connected purposes.

The Committee also considered the Analytical Brief on The Budget Policy Statement (BPS) for the Financial Year 2023/2024 and the Medium Term.
