2022 Elections to cost 40.9 Billions: IEBC
The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) require an estimated Sh 588 billion to procure items for the prevention of the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic ahead of the 2022 general elections.
IEBC chairperson Wafula Chebukati said the money will be used to purchase equipment to be used in adhering to the government health protocol in the prevention of the spread of the disease.
He pointed out that the items to be purchased are thermometer guns, sanitizers, soap and washing points.
“The electoral commission request will bring the total sum it requires to 40.97 billion,” he pointed out.
Chebukati said to carry out all the activities in their Election Operation Plan for next year’s polls the commission requires Sh 40.329 billion.
He spoke when he made his key note address during a workshop for Kenya Media Sector Working Group (KMSWG] held at Flamingo Beach hotel in Nyali constituency, Mombasa county.
The IEBC chairman said the meeting is the second following a similar one held last month in Kwale county.
Chebukati said in last month’s forum they had discussed matters related to the 2022 Electoral Calendar and emerging issues.
He pointed out the next forum within a month will build up on the successes of collaboration and engagement as they move towards the 2022 polls.
“The countdown to next year’s polls begins today and it is important that the media and the country at large pay attention to key electoral processes,” he said.
The IEBC boss said they have allocated a budget of Sh.26.34 billion, leaving a deficit of Sh 14.577 billion.
Chebukati argued it’s worth noting that the Sh 40.917 budget requirement is the bare minimum as per the electoral activities in the Election Operations Plan which are governed by the existing legal framework.
He urged the government to provide sufficient funds as requested to steer away from panic over conducting next year’s polls.
“I wish to encourage each one of us to keep alive this conversation on elections preparation so that Kenyans are well informed of the processes and activities within the Election Calendar,” he stated.
