Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka and his United Opposition counterpart Rigathi Gachagua, the DCP boss, are reading from different scripts on when the outfit should pick a flagbearer for the 2027 polls.

Speaking last week, Kalonzo revealed that they had resolved to unveil their flag bearer for the State House race by the first quarter of  2026, a decision informed by the “fierce urgency of now,” noting that the country could no longer afford prolonged political uncertainty.

“I make this commitment to you: by the first quarter of 2026, the name of our presidential candidate will be made known to Kenyans. The United Opposition is not just a coalition; it’s your government-in-waiting. We are united not by personal ambition, but by shared values,” said Kalonzo in his end-of-year message.

However, three days later, while attending the funeral of Embakasi North MP James Gakuya’s mother in Murang’a, DCP leader Rigathi Gachagua said the Opposition is not in a hurry and will only unveil its flagbearer a few months before the election.

“If we announce our candidate too early, Kasongo will confuse him completely. We will declare our flagbearer a few months to the election so we can face Ruto head-on,” he said.
