Ugandan opposition leader Bobi Wine was forcibly taken away in an army helicopter from his home on Friday, his party said, a day after elections marred by reports of violence.
Bobi Wine, who is challenging President Yoweri Museveni’s 40-year rule over Uganda, had earlier claimed he had been put under house arrest and surrounded by soldiers and police officer.
His capture also comes hours after over 10 of his supporters were shot dead by police in Butambala, South West of the capital, Kampala.
“An army helicopter has landed in President @HEBobiwine’s (Bobi Wine) compound and forcibly taken him away to an unknown destination,” the party posted on its official X page minutes to 10pm on Friday.
Wine’s capture happened after the electoral commission revealed that Museveni was already leading the presidential election with over 70% votes counted in 60% of the polling stations.
According to the figures, Wine had garnered at least 20% of the votes counted so far.
