Former Cabinet Secretary and Chama cha Kazi (CCK) party leader Moses Kuria has sparked political debate after registering as an aspirant to contest the Gatundu South parliamentary seat on the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) ticket ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Kuria confirmed the move on the night of Sunday, February 1, 2026, by sharing a screenshot on his social media platforms showing his successful registration as a UDA MP aspirant, having paid a fee of Ksh5,000.
The announcement has raised eyebrows across the political divide, given that Kuria is the founder and current leader of CCK, a party that has previously fielded candidates under its own banner, most recently in the November 27, 2025, Mbeere North parliamentary by-election.
“I’ve registered as an aspirant to vie for Gatundu South MP on UDA ticket,” Kuria stated, without elaborating on how the decision aligns with his leadership of CCK. The former senior economic advisor to President William Ruto also shared a 2027 UDA campaign poster for the Gatundu South parliamentary seat, featuring his details and campaign slogan.
The move has ignited speculation about the future of CCK and Kuria’s broader political strategy. Some observers view the decision as a sign of deepening alignment with President Ruto’s ruling party, while others interpret it as a pragmatic shift to remain politically relevant in the Mt Kenya region, where UDA currently enjoys overwhelming dominance.
Political analysts note that Kuria’s decision could signal a possible merger or cooperation between CCK and UDA ahead of the 2027 polls. However, no official statement has been issued by CCK regarding the implications of Kuria’s registration on the party’s operations or leadership structure.
Kuria’s announcement came just hours before UDA’s February 2, 2026, deadline for registration into its Aspirants’ Forum, which is open to party members seeking to contest various elective positions in the upcoming General Election. The timing of his move has further fueled speculation about behind-the-scenes negotiations within the ruling coalition.
Gatundu South, Kuria’s political stronghold, has historically been a key constituency in Mt Kenya politics.
