Religious leaders have been challenged to be part and parcel of efforts in the war against drug abuse.

National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA) coast Regional Manager George Karisa has refuted claims government institutions are the only suitable instruments to fight the menace.

He insisted the war against drug abuse is a collective responsibility that required all stakeholders and government agencies to come on board.

Karisa pointed out religious leaders have an upper hand in the campaign against drug abuse.

He was addressing the media during a sensitization workshop for imams at the Star of the Sea Social hall in Mvita constituency, Mombasa county.

The NACADA coast Regional Manager told journalists the one day workshop is aimed to sensitize participants on the war against drug and substance abuse.

Karisa said at the end of the one day workshop he is optimistic they will come up with a way forward in campaigning against the menace.

“Drug abuse is a contentious issue and a great concern in the region,” he added

On her part, NACADA board member Farida Rashid alias Tolle said the workshop will play an important role to the Muslim community and religious leaders at large.

She pointed out majority of Muslim children have been abusing drugs and it has become a big challenge to them.

“I talk about the coast region where Muslim children have taken to abusing drugs,” she pointed out.
