Hope as county releases bursary funds for 62,500 students

Nairobi county government has today Launched Nairobi County Executive and Ward Bursary Funds to city needy students,that will see over 62,000 students benefit.

Speaking at the Launch, The county education cec Janet Ouko said that, the foundation of any ideal society with adequately skilled men and women, capable of bringing about all-round development, is rooted in the sound Education of people.

By taking some financial pressure off vulnerable families, Mrs Ouko said that, Nairobi City County Government will ensure greater success in secondary Education by helping deserving students attain Quality Education and later give back to the Society.

“research has shown that students who receive scholarships become more accountable to themselves and to communities they come from. The government Scholarships do more than pay bills. They also instil a greater sense of belonging and motivation to make it through one’s higher education,”Ouko said.

Ouko added that, this financial year 2019/2020, the Government has committed 400 million for bursaries and Scholarships,and Out of this kitty, each of the 85 wards in Nairobi was allocated Bursary amounting to Kshs.3.5m through their respective MCAs.

“I would like to thank our Hon. Members for their commitment in ensuring fair allocation of these bursaries,” Ouko stated

Ouko further Said that the County Government will fully sponsor bright but needy Nairobi Children admitted to National and County Schools.

” Currently, Form 1, 2, 3 have benefited from this executive scholarship programme as approved by Secondary School fees guidelines, of the Ministry of Education,” Ouko added.

In total,the county Government gave out cheques of 297,500,000 towards the Ward Bursary fund and 207,500,000 toward 4 years full scholarships for the Executive bursary fund,totaling to 505,000,000 million Kenyan shillings.

On his part, the education member committee Nairobi County Assembly who doubles up as Parklands Mca Jayendre Malde welcomed the move and Urged needy students to work hard in their studies.

“I want to urge students who are beneficiary to take advantage of this opportunity and work hard in their studies if they want bright future,” Malde said.

Malde further added that, the move comes at a time education sector in the county was poorly managed from the previous regime.
