Joho asks BBI opponents to stop campaigning in coast against the drive

Opponents of the amendment of the 2010 constitution through the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) should stop wasting their time to pitch tent to woo voters in the coast region.

Mombasa governor Hassan Ali Joho cautioned Deputy President William Ruto that the region has no swing votes to oppose the initiative ahead of the much awaited referendum.

He urged them to spare their time and energy to woo votes against the initiative somewhere else but not in the region.

“All votes in the region are intact and the people rally behind the passing of the initiative ahead of the day,” he pointed out.

Joho scoffed at the opponents and cautioned them to tread carefully saying they are more organized than before.

He spoke to the media after emerging from a closed-door meeting with members of county assembly at Bahari beach hotel in Mombasa county.

The governor insisted they have put strategies in place to support the initiative against its opponents.

Joho, who was accompanied by Kisauni legislator Ali Mbogo and his Changamwe counterpart Omar Mwinyi and Mombasa Woman Representative Asha Hussein alias Ashu, told them to stop taking the coast region for granted.

He insisted his key role is to ensure there is unity in the region and to speak with one voice ahead of the 2022 general election.

Meanwhile all MCAs drawn from the region will converge this week to discuss the initiative.

Efforts to get details were futile by time of going of going to press.
