Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe has called on county governments to emulate the tactic being used by Kajiado governor Josesp Ole Lenku to mobilise more people to register for NHIF.

The governor on Tuesday unveiled a programme that targets goat farmers and the aim is to have them offer one goat in exchange for enhanced NHIF registration.

The program is dubbed Mbuzi Moja Afya bora initiative and targets to have over 17,000 families covered.

The Maasai community in Kajiado and Narok counties are known for their ability to rear goats in their hundreds and sometimes in thousands.

With one goat selling at Sh 3000 now, this means that the farmers will not only be registering but will have paid for extra months in advance.

According to Kagwe, more inventive ways of ensuring more Kenyans are welcomed.

” We welcome what is happening in Kajiado and this is why I am calling on all the county governors not to relent in coming up with more inventive and reasonable ways to help us,”Lenku added.

While unveiling the programme,Lenku said that it is part of his administration’s long term plan towards Universal Health Coverage.

“Universal Health Coverage entails access to affordable heatlh care and this part of our plan which is also within the big four agenda,”Lenku said

So far, he has issued NHIF cards to beneficiaries in Isinet, Imbirikani/ Eselenkei Ward, Kajiado South, where hundreds of residents walked home assured of quality health.
