KMPDC to Shut Down Hospitals if Found Guilty

The Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council has commenced investigations into the alleged collusion to defraud the National Health Insurance Fund.

KMPDC says the hospitals mentioned in the scandal face closure should they be found guilty.

KMPDC Chief Executive Officer David Kariuki in a statement said that the Council is supporting other Government agencies towards reinforcing the ongoing investigations.

“Action will be taken on any practitioner or health facility found culpable of the allegations raised in line with the provisions of the Medical Practitioners and Dentist Act Cap 253,”

KMPDC maintained that it is committed to protecting the public through regulating medical practitioners and health facilities to ensure quality healthcare is delivered to all Kenyans.

This comes at a time that the government through the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council (KMPDC) has intensified crackdown on rogue hospitals shutting down 46 health facilities in Mombasa County for operating unlawfully.

An additional 25 facilities were partially closed for failing to maintain the stipulated standards and norms.

Last week KMPDC also suspended all eight medical facilities identified by Health Cabinet Secretary Nakhumicha Wafula as having allegedly siphoned funds from the National Health and Insurance Fund (NHIF).

This follows an exposé that revealed that a number of private hospitals are part of an elaborate syndicate working with unscrupulous NHIF staff to rob unsuspecting citizens and government of the healthcare funds.

KMPDC Chair Prof. Stanley Khainga noted that the health facilities, which are largely domiciled in Nairobi, Kiambu and Nyeri counties, will remain closed until investigations are concluded by relevant authorities.
