Meet Kibaki’s nephew vying for Othaya parliamentary seat

Political heavy weights eyeing the Othaya Parliamentary seat are still holding their horses few months to the 2022 elections, even as newcomers hit the ground running.

The family of former president Mwai Kibaki has announced a plan to field Dr Joseph Maina Kiragu for Othaya parliamentary race.

The seat is currently held by Gichuki Mugambi who succeeded former MP Mary Wambui.

Speaking in an interview with media , Dr Joseph Maina Kiragu who is Mwai Kibaki nephew said that he has the blessings of the family to vie for the seat.

He is a cousin to Laikipia governor Nderitu Mureithi and the New Democrats (TND) deputy party leader Jimmie Kibaki.

Dr Kiragu has said that he will vie for the seat on the PNU ticket whose Ndiritu Mureithi is the party leader.

He will face off with Gichuki Mugambi (incumbent MP), Kagwe Muchiri (TND candidate), Wakili Ngunjiri wa macani, Wanyanga Cecelia among others.

He has said that he is the best candidate to continue with the legacy of president Kibaki that seem to have slowed down.

He said that he will not peg his expected victory on President Kibaki’s support and neither will he riding on wealth or his prominence in the constituency.

He observed that if elected MP, he would be following the advice of the constituents, noting that women and the youth needed more empowerment through financial support to start income-generating projects.

Dr Kiragu campaigned for Mwai Kibaki before the chaotic 2007 poll but has otherwise kept a low profile until now.

He has promised to work hard to transform the lives of the people in his community. He has called on Kenyans to ignore politicians peddling baseless mudslinging propaganda and also refrain from being misguided.

He said that the August election should be peaceful as politics is not a matter of life and death.
