Nurses union aspirant tours third county in bid to install new leadership at the giant trade union

Kenya National Union of Nurses (KNUN) Secretary General aspirant Halima Adan on Wednesday told nurses to joins forces in calling for fresh elections at the union.

Halima who two weeks ago in Kitui launched a drive to get Kenyan nurses to sign petitions that will implore labour relations court to order for fresh elections at the giant nurses union spoke in Kiambu county during a meeting with representatives of nurses in the county.

Together with her team they pledged to fight what they described as self-imposed leadership of KNUN secretary general Seth Panyako and his group.

Adan who is running against Panyako for secretary general post said the group is challenging the election of Panyako and all officials elected on February 26 saying they do not recognise them as their bonafide representatives.

“The manner and procedure of electing officials was grossly violated and we are in court to ensure that mistake is corrected by the Employment and Labour Relations court,” she said.

Adan stated that her team is not only determined to seek justice and accountability but also ensure that proper polls are held to put in office lawful office bearers.

She further called on the registrar of trade unions, whom the team has also petitioned, to rectify a decision that recognised the union officials until the matter before court is determined.

“The office of the registrar and the labour ministry are in receipt of our petitions which they are yet to respond to. We are hoping that they will respond to us soon,” she said.

She disclosed that her team has completed signing petitions with nurses in three counties, namely; Kitui, Machakos and Kiambu and was moving forward in the coming weeks to cover all 47 counties in the country.

The petitions, the team said, are to be launched in court to seek deregistration of Panyako’s group and order fresh polls.
