President Kenyatta hits out at DCI for wanting to revive 2007/8 PEV cases

President Uhuru Kenyatta on Wednesday hit out at the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Director George Kinoti for stating that he was keen on reviving the 2007-2008 Post Election Violence cases that saw hundreds killed and thousands displaced after a disputed General Election.
Speaking off the curve after launching the signature collection for the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) draft bill at KICC Nairobi, the head of state said that Kinoti’s move will be disastrous for the country that has been enjoying peace in the recent past, adding that he will not allow the country to drift to dark days.
‘There are those who are busy trying to open up graves if what I have been reading in newspapers is anything to go by. They are joking and I will not allow such things to happen. We left there and we buried those things and none should be reminded about the same. Some people are not even using brains on the matter. You don’t think before you talk, you don’t think before you act. You must always think before you do something. We do not want chaos in the country again,’ the President said.
This comes after Kinoti said he intended to reopen the cases alleging that some victims have come out complaining and that they were seeking justice.

Deputy President William Ruto took to social media and castigated Kinoti expressing his displeasure with the renewed focus of the DCI.
‘The provocative INCITEMENT to ethnic hate/division INTENDED by the resurrection of PEV is an EVIL attempt to resuscitate the TRIBE project DESTROYED by the HUSTLER movements’ REALISATION that poverty&unemployment DELIBERATELY bred by poor leadership is our PROBLEM NOT our tribes.’ Ruto tweeted.
While also expressing their displeasure, a section of leaders allied to the Deputy President held a press conference from Parliament Buildings on Tuesday, the leaders in a statement said that the DCI was not focusing on any person other than the DP in a bid to derail him from ascending to the pResidency come 2022.
‘The statement by DCI is a desperate move by the system after failing in all their efforts to bring down the DP. They want to incite violence against communities in Rift Valley, and especially Eldoret, to weaken the DP’s political strength in Mt Kenya region,’ Elgeyo Marakwet Senator Kipchumba Murkomen claimed.
Nakuru Senator Susan Kihika accused Kinoti of inciting communities and raising tension in the country by trying to reopen old cases.
She warned the State against using security organs to commit crime out of political desperation.
Kapseret MP Oscar Sudi claimed: “These people have hit the dead end, they are now trying to use anything to bar DP from vying come 2022… as leaders from Rift Valley, we’re still asking if indeed they want the case to be reopened, why can’t they revive all, why are their focus only in Dr. Ruto’s political bastion, more so North Rift? We know these are wishes of Kieleweke.”
Makueni Senator Mutula Kilonzo Jnr, cautioned: “The re-opening of post-election violence cases on account of threats to individuals must be interrogated.
