Reprieve for Sonko as senate opts for plenary session in impeachment motion

The fate of Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko will be prosecuted by the entire senate.Speaker Ken Lusaka invoked standing order 74 to give room for a plenary debate after Majority leader Samuel Poghisio declined to move the motion.

The move appears to be friendly to Governor Sonko who has refused to give up on his bid to defeat the motion.

The other option for the senate was a committee of 11- like in the case of Kirinyaga governor Ann Waiguru.

It was widely feared that a committee of 11 would easily be intimidated by interested parties like the state and political party leaders.

Sonko’s lawyer Harrison Kinyanjui has however indicated that the Govenor was ready to defend himself anywhere.

Before the speaker have his direction on the matter, a number of Senators had already poked holes on the electronic voting system,noting that they want a verifiable process.

The senators demanded a clear guideline on how the voting system will be done.

Bungoma senator Moses Wetangula pleased with the speaker to allow the house to vote ectronically with every senator doing it physically on the floor of the house.

” I plead with you that we use our traditional voting style where every vote can be accounted for,” Wetangula said.

Narok senator Ledama Ole Kina requested that the house conducts a mock test on how the process can be conducted.

Sonko was impeached last Thursday on various accounts of gross misconduct and abuse of office.

He has vowed to defeat the motion and finish his term
