Rotary District 9212 Calls On Kenyan Government To Provide Free Tertiary Education To Youth With Disabilities

Rotary District 9212 (comprising Kenya, Ethiopia, South Sudan and Eritrea) has urged Kenya’s Ministry of Education to make tertiary education free for youth with disabilities.

Speaking during the  42nd Rotary Sunshine Rally that took place at Ulinzi Sports Complex in Nairobi on Saturday 17th February 2024, the District Governor in District 9212 for the year 2023/2024 is DG Leornad Ithau offered that it was time the government did the same so as to enable equal education opportunities to youth with disabilities.

Over ,8 000 children living with various disabilities attended the fete.

“Far too many youth with disabilities are locked out of vocational training institutions. We would also like to reiterate the call for free healthcare, through the Social Health Insurance Fund, to persons with disabilities. More needs to be done to make our education and health systems truly inclusive,’’ Sunshine Rally Chairman Vincent Mambo said.

This is an annual fun day started in 1979 by Philanthropist and Rotarian, Dr. Manu Chandaria, 42 years ago. The event has grown each year and has devolved to counties including the Coast,
Western Kenya and Mt. Kenya regions.

It was a wonderful opportunity  that seeks to inspire the children to see that they can grow up and pursue their professional dreams in whatever sector.

Sunshine rally is an opportunity to create awareness about differently abled children and amplify issues requiring urgent attention.

“In total we hope to engage with nearly 10,000 children in Nairobi, at the Coast, Western Kenya and Mt. Kenya regions,’’ Rotary’s Sunshine Rally Chairman Vincent Mambo said.

 

The event was dotted with entertainment with surprise visits from celebrities, comedians Smart Joker and Mtumishi food and gifts and many other activities.

Present was Dr. Joe Kamau is the District Governor Elect who is poised to take over from DG Ithau.
