William Ruto has been declared the winner of the 2022 presidential elections edging out opposition leader Raila Odinga.

The official results reported by the chairman of the electoral commission on Monday, show that the Deputy president won with over 7.1 million against Raila’s 6.9 million in the close contest.

According to Kenya’s electoral laws for one to be declared a winner he/she must garner 50 percent of the total plus one vote.

Slow progress by the electoral commission in tallying Tuesday’s vote have fed anxiety in East Africa’s most economically advanced country, which was shaken by bloody post-poll violence following disputed 2007 elections and now faces an economic and social crisis.
