Ruto says SGR a noble idea, puts cargo cartels on notice

The construction of the standard gauge railway [SGR] from Mombasa to Nairobi was a noble idea by the government and was not meant to enrich some individuals.

Deputy President William Ruto dismissed claims the project was meant to kill the economy of Mombasa at the expense of a few individuals.

He added the government had no plan to turn the port of Mombasa into a white elephant after the completion of the flagship project.

“The flagship project was meant well for Mombasa residents,” he pointed out.

He spoke during one of his funds drive in aid of boda boda operators held at Frere Town Primary School in Nyali constituency, Mombasa county.

The Deputy President lashed out at cartels for invading the transport of cargo and goods through the SGR freight service.

Ruto, who was hosted by area MP Mohamed Ali, reminded the forum the facility was meant to ease traffic congestion and improve transport along the corridor.

He added the facility was also meant to make movement of vehicles easier along the highway.

“The facility was meant to hasten movement and lessen the burden of clearance of cargo and goods at the port of Mombasa and not visa-versa,” he pointed out.

The DP said the government’s main agenda for the introduction of the freight service was to de-congest transport along the busy highway.

Ruto assured county residents when he forms the next government he will ensure the facility will be in line with government agenda of making the port facility a free zone.

He regretted the Dongo Kundu bypass which was meant to create employment opportunities and improve the county economy was moving at a slow pace.

“I will ensure the port of Mombasa will reclaim its lost glory to put the county’s economy back on its feet,’ he emphasized.
