Sonko to withdraw protest letter on Deed of Transfer

Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has said that he will not pursue the declaration of dispute between the county and the national government.
The governor has said that his handshake with the NMS Director General Mohamed Badi has paved way for discussions that will help iron out his concerns on how the two entities should operate.
He has also promised not to sue the NMS over the recent death of a resident in Mukuru Kwa Reuben Slums during demolitions by the state agency. He says he will now push for compensation to the family in consultation with Badi.
He said this while inspecting road and street lighting projects in Mukuru Kwa Reauben Slums where he was accompanied by six MCAs.
Sonko said that a few legal issues need to be ironed out to pave way for the smooth operation of NMS and the County Government without attracting unnecessary fights.
Sonko had declared a dispute between the county and the national government, in a letter to Attorney General Paul Kihara and Devolution CS Eugene Wamalwa.In the letter, he claimed that the takeover deal was grounded in “sheer bad faith and monumental breaches of the intergovernmental relations Act”.
He now says the tussle is over after the goodwill by both parties to seat down and work together.
“There was a lot of confusion and propaganda. We will do everything possible to ensure that we abandon all cases and work together,”
The High Court had also declared the takeover illegal, but with the truce, the governor said that there is no need to go on with it.
His sentiments come a day after Devolution CS Eugine Wamalwa told a senate committee that there are legal issues that need clarification on how the two entities can operate.
PROJECTS
Governor Sonko clarified that the County Government will complete projects that fall under the transferred functions then hand them over to the NMS for the official launch.
He said that they have agreed to jointly launch project together with Badi. This will start with the launch of Michuki Park in an event that will be graced by President Uhuru Kenyatta.
The County has been undertaking a number of road, street lighting and sewer management projects in all the 87 wards.
