Student wins KPA golf tournament in Mombasa

A 15 year old student beat the odds to emerge overall winner of the fourth leg of the 2022 Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) golf tournament played at Nyali Golf  and Country Club in Mombasa county over the weekend.

Fidel Wasike, who had a shaky start, posted 45 points to register his second victory this year.

The Braeburn Mombasa International School student beat 252 golfers playing off 27 handicap during the authority’s final base tournament.

Fidel, an only child of a couple, scored 21 points on the first ninth hole and 24 points on the second ninth hole before being crowned overall winner.

The winner had won during the Kenya Association of Hotel Keepers & Caterers [KAHC] golf tournament played at the same venue early this year. 

The men’s title went  to Michael  Kariuki after posting 43 points playing off 23 handicap and after scoring 20 points on the first ninth hole and 23 points on the second ninth hole.

Miqdad Waiji won the runners up award after posting 42 points on count back  playing off  9 handicap. He managed to score 20 points on the first ninth hole and 22 points on the second ninth hole.

Dr Atul Shah won the third award in the men’s category playing off 26  handicap while Jamal Soud won the fourth award in the same category after posting 41 points on count back.

A businesswoman Jayne Githere won the award in the ladies category during the one day tournament which recorded the highest number of golfers after posting 41 points.

Playing off 26 handicap she scored 17 points on the first ninth hole and 24 points on the second ninth hole.

Educationist Christine Ockotch won the runners up award in the ladies category after posting 39 points.

Playing off 17 handicap she scored 22 points on the first ninth hole and 17 points on the second ninth hole.

KPA chairman Joseph Kibwana and KPA acting Managing Director John Mwangemi graced the colorful awarding ceremony. 

Former KPA Managing Director Brown Ondego was among the golfers who took part during the tournament.
