Hundreds of thousands of private security personnel have been left jobless following the renewal of licenses of 183 private security providers out of the nearly 2,000 private security firms.

This was communicated by the Private Security Regulatory Authority CEO Fazul Mohamed. Companies affected have criticized the government’s move alleging it is not legal.

According to the notice issued, it will be illegal for any private security provider to run a firm if not registered and issued with a 5-year license.

In addition to that, it has illegalized the hiring, employment and services of unlicensed private security firms.

Through the notice, the Private Security Regulatory Authority reiterated that only the 5-year license would be used as proof that a company is registered.

The affected companies have vowed to go to court and sue the Private Security Regulatory Authority CEO Fazul Mohamed.

The former Cabinet Secretary for Interior Fred Matiang’i in early 2022 had said measures would be taken to streamline private security providers.
