Where Is Wafula Chebukati? Kenyans Ask Whereabouts of Former IEBC Boss As Rumours of his Health Swirl Online

Kenyans are asking the whereabouts of former IEBC Chairman Wafula Chebukati, who retired following the end of his tenure at the electoral commission in 2023 and has stayed off the media limelight.

On Monday, rumours of Mr. Chebukati being admitted to a top health facility in Nairobi surfaced online, with several netizens speculating the former electoral commission boss is seriously ill.

Chebukati’s family has not confirmed or denied the online rumors.

Three weeks ago, Chebukati and the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) and former Chairman Wafula Chebukati got a major reprieve after the High Court dismissed a petition challenging the closure of the election results portal following the 2022 General Election.

Justice Lawrence Mugambi upheld the IEBC’s decision to remove the portal’s presidential result after 90 days.

Petitioners had faulted Chebukati and the electoral commission’s decision to close the portal within three months of the 2022 General Election arguing that this violated the public’s constitutional right to access information, transparency, and fair administrative action.
