In response to the widespread flooding wreaking havoc across various regions of the country, the Blue Economy, Water, and Irrigation Committee, chaired by Hon. Kangogo Bowen of Marakwet East, convened today to address the pressing situation.

Committee members deliberated on the devastating impact of the floods and the urgent need for intervention measures to mitigate further damage. One of the key decisions made was to invite the Ministry of Water, Sanitation, and Irrigation to provide insights into the actions taken following the alert of heavy rains, the extent of destruction caused, and the current plans to address the crisis.

Concerns were raised regarding access to clean water in the affected areas, considering the health risks associated with contaminated floodwater. Members emphasized the importance of ensuring that affected communities have access to safe and clean drinking water to prevent the outbreak of waterborne diseases.

Additionally, the Committee discussed a recent capacity-building exercise undertaken by some members on the theme of “developing resilient and creditworthy municipalities and water and sanitation utilities.” The program, which took place in Dubai from November 20 to 24 last year, aimed to enhance the capacity, efficiency, and effectiveness of municipalities and their water utilities. The objective was to improve living conditions, economic opportunities, and climate resilience for residents.

A comprehensive report detailing the outcomes of the capacity-building exercise will be presented to the House on Thursday this week. The report is expected to provide valuable insights and recommendations to inform future initiatives aimed at strengthening water and sanitation infrastructure and addressing challenges related to flooding and water management in the country.

As the nation grapples with the aftermath of the flooding crisis, the Blue Economy Committee remains committed to exploring sustainable solutions and advocating for the well-being of all citizens, particularly those affected by natural disasters.
