Bungoma Governor Awards 5th Cohort of Bursary Beneficiaries

Over 300 needy but bright pupils who sat for their KCPE in 2021 in Mt.Elgon have received full bursaries from Bungoma County governor.
While handing over the bursaries at Kimobo Primary school, Bungoma Governor Wycliffe Wangamati dismissed the allegations from his opponents who claim that he only gives bursaries on favouritism basis.
“As evident today, you can see before you orphans, children of Bodaboda riders,illicit liquor brewers and vegetable venders receiving bursaries from Wangamati Scholarship Program,”said the governor.
He further encouraged the students to maintain discipline and be focused as they further their education in the quest to rewrite their history and that of their family.
“Be grateful for this golden opportunity you’ve been granted to continue with your education and always be respectful to your parents even though their status at the moment is wanting,” Wangamati advised.
David Masudi, principal at Kimobo Primary school discouraged the students from early sexual engagements which may result to early pregnancies.
“ It will be very sad to go through such tough times only to get bursary then cut short your dream by getting pregnant, men and boys alike should maintain discipline to avoid such cases,” he cautioned.
The governor on the other hand assured area residents that he is set to take the beneficiaries not only through secondary education but also give them 100% bursaries through university and higher education institutions.
The vetting and selection process was also confirmed to be fair though tough since Mt.Elgon has a higher percentage of poverty stricken families.
Speaking during the event,Evelyn Chematot, CSO Elgon Ward stated that despite many pupils qualifying to get bursaries, the ones selected were beyond reasonable doubt fit to get help.
The governor also boasted of satisfactory results citing that so far 430 students out of 500 from the first cohort of bursary beneficiaries had qualified to join University.
“In 2018 I enrolled 500 students, in 2019 -550,in 2020 -600 and 2000 in 2021,” Wangamati reiterated.
He further urged the residents and especially parents to be promoters of peace during this campaign period so that they can vote peacefully and wisely while prioritizing their children’s future through education.
