Win for Meru residents as KURA Completes Road Project’s
Meru residents have a reason to smile after the government announced completion of road projects in the county.
The Kenya Urban Roads Authority has confirmed that all the national government’s bypass roads infrastructure within Meru and Maua towns is 100 percent complete and ready for official opening.
The road projects are a fulfilment of President Uhuru Kenyatta’s big four agenda.
The roads authority has emphasised its agenda to fast-track the completion of other several roads undergoing construction and maintenance in other parts of the country.
Speaking while on a tour of the County to inspect progress of projects being undertaken by the agency, KURA Director General, Engineer Silas Kinoti lauded his teams on the ground for their commitment to finish the work within the stipulated time.
“We are working very hard to help the President achieve success in Infrastructural development, an area he is committed towards ahead of his exit from office. The works in the roads under KURA in Meru town and its environs are at 100% completion with the projects expected to be launched for public use before the end of the year “noted the soft spoken DG
He also hailed the partnership between his office and Meru county government saying the cooperation is meant to increase efficiency in the delivery of services to mwananchi.
According to the Constitution, the roads function is a shared responsibility. The national government is responsible for construction and maintenance of national trunk roads while County governments are responsible for county roads.
“There is a cordial relationship and a good support by County, the Jubilee government so that we actualise President Uhuru Kenyatta’s Big Four agenda.These mega roads projects will lead to more investors coming to pump their resources in Meru, create more jobs and enable farmers to easily reach to Market with their produce.” he further added.
In Meru town, the Eastern bypass connects to Maua junction at Kaaga area while the Western bypass runs from the Meru National Polytechnic to Gikumene.
The construction of the Sh1.5 billion, 15km Maua-Athiru Gaiti-Kilili- Meru national park road is also complete to accelerate economic growth and reduce traffic jams in Meru town.
Urban roads are key enablers of economic growth and have productive interlinkages with other socio-economic activities such as industrial, services, agricultural, commercial, social institutions and households.
In response to increased urbanization and demand for an efficient urban road network,Kinoti says the Authority has developed and adopted initiatives and strategies that will lead to increased connectivity and improved access to attract more investments inching the Country closer to attaining the Big Four Agenda.
