Bungoma County parents with children living with disability have been urged to come out and bring them to school so that they can be enrolled to institutions that can accommodate their needs.

This has been facilitated by UNICEF in collaboration with Special Olympics Kenya and the Ministry of Education which has on Friday conducted assessment of the special needs children aged between 6 and 13 years at Kapsokwony DEB Primary and Junior Secondary School in Mt.Elgon Sub County.

Speaking during the event, Mildred Nduku, the project manager of the event revealed that they are expecting to assess at least 200 children and enroll them to respective institutions as required.

“We have rolled out this program in 5 Sub Counties within Bungoma County including Tongaren and  Kanduyi besides other ASAL regions; we encourage more parents to emulate the ones who have heed to this calling,” advised  Mildred.

Parents from across Mt.Elgon have also applauded the program and brought out their children to benefit from it.

Judith Nafula from Kaptola was grateful that her 16 year old son had undergone the assessment test by doctors and she’s hopeful that he will be placed accordingly.

“I hope that after this exercise, my son will get a school and better his education, I will also be relieved the task of carrying him on the wheelbarrow each day to and from school,” Nafula commented.

Juma Joseph from Kamneru had also arrived with his 13 year old boy who suffers tumefaction and chest problem besides inability to stand or walk independently.

“My son was born in a normal state but developed these complications while in nursery school, he is now in grade 2 and I look forward to get help from this program so that he will be educated and capacitated to the best of his abilities,” said Joseph.

Conclusively, Nduku called upon all parents with special needs children to be aggressive and promote inclusivity by taking action and bringing them forth for subsequent enrollment.
