The Departmental Committee on Administration and Internal Affairs has called for increased funding to the security sector following the surge in insecurity incidences in certain parts of the country.

The call emerged this evening when the Committee met to review the Report on the Consideration of the Budget Policy Statement, 2023 for Ministries and State Department under their purview.

The Departmental Committee is mandated to oversight the Executive Office of the President, the Office of the Deputy President, the Office of the Prime Cabinet Secretary and the State Department for Internal Security and National Administration.

Others offices that fall under the Committee are the State Department for Immigration and Citizen Services, the National Police Service, the National Police Service Commission and the Independent Policing Oversight Authority.

In the session chaired by the Committee’s Vice Chairman and Saku MP, Hon. Dido Rasso, legislators underscored the need for adequate funding to all government agencies dealing with security matters, a move that would be a shot in the arm to the ongoing security operation to flush out bandits in the north rift.

“With the perennial insecurity that we are witnessing across the country, it would be very important that the next budget priotises adequately kitting security agencies to effectively deal with emerging security threats. We also need to provide mobility to security agencies and other government officials as they move to restore peace and security in the affected areas”, noted Hon. Rasso.

At the same time, the Committee Members have pointed out the need for the Ministry of Internal Security and National Administration to review its strategy in the on-going operation. The legislators took issue with continued skirmishes in the areas under operation which led to the loss of lives over the weekend.
