Education Scholarships and Mentorship Programme for Learners With Disabilities Unveiled
The National Council for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD) in conjunction with Kenya Pipeline Company, University of Nairobi, Kenya Commercial Bank, Foundation and the Higher Education Loans Board has unveiled the Ustawi Education Scholarships for learners with disabilities.
The Programme will benefit thousands of students with disabilities nationally catering for tuition and school fees.
Speaking during the event, Cabinet Secretary for Labor and Social Protection Florence Bore called for called for societal support towards empowering learners with disabilities to access quality education.
“I urging the NCPWD to collaborate with Ministry of Education to ensure that the needs of the children living with disabilities are included in the curriculum to end stigma. CS was speaking during the launch of Ustawi Scholarships which targets children living with disabilities to get education,” stated CS Bore.
Nominated Senator George Mbugua lauded the council for mobilizing resources and partners to sponsor the project.
“The government has fulfilled its promise to ensure affordable education is made accessible to Kenyans and persons with disabilities. The programme focuses on secondary school, college and university students and it will be a continuous programme,” said Hon Mbugua.
Ustawi Education Scholarships is a conglomerate of various scholarship programmes
namely Faulu, Wezesha (specifically for students without disabilities who are from
vulnareable households and needy parents with disabilities), and Kenya Pipeline Foundation, KCB Foundation and Hellen McGowan scholarship).
