The Farmers Party presented to the Supreme Court of Kenya, a petition to enjoin itself to the 2022 presidential Elections Petition, to ensure that the rights of farmers are protected and their voices are heard. Farmers form over 65% of Kenya’s voters and they fulfilled their civic duty on 9th August 2022, by waking up to vote for their candidates of choice.

The petition is supported by the affidavits from; Irungu Nyakera – Chairperson, Farmers Party, Julius Mochama Mumbo – a farmer from Nyamira County, Cheruiyot Rono Ballach – a farmer from Bomet County, Victor Rono – Farmer from Kericho County, Simon Nene Ikinu – a farmer from Muranga County and John Kahura – Farmer, Kiambu County. The petition was filed through the party’s lawyer, Chege Kamau.

Farmers Party participated in the 2022 elections, where we fronted candidates in various positions including Governors, Senators, Women Representatives, Members of Parliament, and Members of County Assemblies.

During the filing of the petition, Irungu Nyakera, the Chairperson of the Farmers Party said,” I was a gubernatorial candidate in Murang’a County, and though I was not successful, I can confirm that IEBC conducted the election in a verifiable, fair, and transparent manner. The 2022 elections have set a new bar for open governance in elections, that Africa can emulate.”

This petition by the Farmers Party aligns with the dissenting opinion of Lady Justice Njoki Ndungu in Raila Odinga Vs IEBC & Others 2017 which sought the following answers to determine if elections were conducted properly: Was there a problem with the registration of voters; Were the voters properly identified at the polling center; Were the voters allowed to cast their votes peacefully and within good time; Were the votes cast counted, declared and verified at the polling stations.

By enjoining in the Presidential election petition of 2022, Farmers Party gives a rare opportunity for the input of an ordinary voter in the most critical decision in the country. Farmers are further looking forward to the fast resolution of the Presidential election petition, to ensure the return of Normalcy that is required to have farmers go back to nation-building.
