Nairobi gubernatorial hopeful Richard Ngatia has said that his government will fix the unemployment and water crisis in the city.

Ngatia on Wednesday outlined a number of strategies, among them luring more investors for industrialisation and directly involving youths in environmental and sanitation programs.

Speaking when he met residents of Mathare and Ruaraka in Nairobi, Ngatia said that his international connections and experience as the Kenya Chambers of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) will help a great deal in bringing in more investors in the city.

“As the president of KCCI and having been in charge of 177 cities across the world as well as the 12 cities  in the lake basin region, we have the potential to to bring in investors who can employ our youths,”Ngatia said.

Ngatia encouraged youths and women groups to register companies through which the county can contract them in community based initiatives like garbage collection and be paid well.

He noted that involving the community directly in such programs but at a professional level is the way to go.

He further promised to build more public toilets within the main markets, satellite towns around the CBD and other fast growing areas.

This he said will give youths more opportunities because a good number will be employed to take care of them.

“This toilets generate a minimum of Sh 100,000 a day but we cannot tell where the money goes.We are going to build more and have 100 youths taking care of each one of them,”Ngatia stated.

He also promised to ensure that youth-run companies together with people living with disabilities are given 30% of procurement opportunities at City Hall.

“This is a provision that is in law so we only need to actualize it and that should not be a problem,” Ngatia added.

On the water crisis,he promised to ensure that each and every household gets access to clean running water.

His strategy will revolve around cracking down on water cartels who divert or deliberately disconnect water for selfish commercial purposes.

Ngatia was accompanied by former Kasarani MP Elizabeth Ongoro Reuben Ndolo, who rallied ODM supporters behind Ngatia.

Also present were 20 Elected Nairobi MCAs and 12 former MCAs who are seeking reelection.
