PACJA Leads Tree-Planting Efforts at Kenyatta University
The Pan African Climate Justice Alliance (PACJA), a consortium representing more than 1000 faith-based organizations, grassroots community-based organizations (CBOs), trusts, foundations, farmer and pastoralist groups from 51 African countries, displayed its commitment to environmental conservation by leading the Kenyatta University community in a tree-planting exercise.
This initiative aligns with the government’s directive urging the public to contribute to reforestation efforts.
In a significant move, the Cabinet Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Professor Kithure Kindiki, declared Monday, November 13th, a public holiday dedicated to a nationwide tree-planting exercise.
This aligns with the government’s ambitious plan to plant approximately 15 billion trees by the year 2032.
Within the University precincts, more than 3000 trees were planted, with the enthusiastic participation of over 200 students and staff members of Kenyatta University.
The tree varieties chosen for this exercise included Gravelia Robusta, Olea Africana, Casuarina, and Sycamore trees. These diverse tree species were carefully selected to promote biodiversity and environmental sustainability.
Across Kenya, similar tree-planting initiatives are taking place, with the active involvement of county governments and local leaders.
This collective effort underscores the nation’s commitment to combatting deforestation, enhancing ecological balance, and addressing the challenges posed by climate change.
