Partners to come on board after heavy rains flood Mombasa      

Mombasa county handles almost 3 million people daily compared to its population of 1.2 million people.  

Mombasa County Executive Committee in charge of Social Services Kenneth Muigai confirmed heavy rains which have pounded the port city during this year’s Eid  celebrations has caused floods in the area.

He pointed out the rains have affected vulnerable residents of six sub counties within the county after heavy rains flood Mombasa.

“We are appealing to partners to come on board to assist vulnerable populations  namely in Mvita, Likoni, Nyali, Jomvu and Changagmwe,” he said.            

Muigai confirmed the creation of a county disaster management committee team composed of local county government officers and Kenya Red Cross Society [KRCS] Mombasa branch officials.       

He was addressing journalists during a media briefing held at KRCS office in Mvita constituency, Mombasa County.

The County Executive Committee in charge of  Social Services told the media heavy rains have caused floods affecting vulnerable populations in six sub counties.

Muigai, who was flanked by KRCS Mombasa branch chairman Mahmoud Noor, added that partners are expected to address the immediate needs of affected individuals before the situation worsens.

He added that despite the county having a population of 1.2 million it basically handles more than 2 billion people who are on transit on a single day.

“Some houses have been destroyed by the strong winds and heavy rains,” he pointed out.
