The price of maize flour to go down by end of next month

The government is committed to ensuring the price of maize flour goes down by next month.

Agriculture cabinet Secretary Mithika Linturi said the government is determined to ensure the price goes down by February.

He insisted apart from the price of maize flour the price of other essential commodities will also go down.

“The move is in line with Kenya Kwanza election campaign pledges during last August’s polls,” he said.

Linturi declined to comment on maize farmers’ protests on the government’s move to import maize.

He was addressing the media during his fact-finding tour at Gold Crown beverages in Mvita constituency, Mombasa county.

The CS reiterated the government will import both rice and maize as a result of projections.

Linturi said the projections are alarming about food security forcing the government to seek urgent mitigation measures.

He cautioned if the government fails to take urgent mitigation measures members of the public will die.

“They will die as a result of lack of food and the measures are taken to avert starvation,” he pointed out.

The CS defended the government for taking short-term mitigation measures instead of long-term ones.

Linturi disclosed that while the government has taken short-term measures to import maize plans are at an advanced stage to plant maize in the next six months.

He told journalists it’s the work of the government of the day to ensure there is enough food in the country.

“It’s a painful decision to import maize but it’s the best route the government has taken with the prevailing situation,” he stated.
