Uhuru leads leaders to Kabarak to mark 1st anniversary of the late President Moi

President Uhuru Kenyatta on Thursday led several leaders in a Memorial service for the late President Mzee Daniel Toroitich arap Moi in Kabarak.

The President said Mzee Moi respected everybody, he had the strength that comes from humility.

“For 17 years he served the founding father, Mzee Jomo Kenyatta with respect and extended it to the people of Kenya when he took over power,” he said.

Uhuru further said Moi respected President Mwai Kibaki although he was not his choice.

“I had a problem when I was elected President because Mzee Moi would always stand and greet me regardless of the age,” he said.

Several other leaders who attended the servive include but not least to Wiper Party Leader Kalonzo Musyoka, ANC Party Leader Musalia Mudavadi, Ford Kenya Party Leader who is also Bungoma Senator Moses Wetangula, Nakuru Governor Lee Kinyanjui, Elgeyo Marakwet Governor Alex Tolgos amongst other dignitaries.

Mudavadi said that he fondly remembers late Mzee Moi as the epitome of humility, compassion and hard work. His legacy will not be forgotten.

“Mzee Moi was at ease with the very simple person and was at ease with the kings and queens of this world. He was very humane,” Mudavadi said.

Wetangula on his part said late Mzee Moi was friends with ordinary Kenyans in places you’d least expect.

Governor Kinyajui offered that the magic word for Mzee Moi was forgiveness.

“He would always forgive you no matter what you did as long as you asked for forgiveness,” Kinyanjui said of late Mzee Moi.  

Moi’s eldest son Raymond Moi who is also the Rongai MP said it was not a day of mourning but a day to remember the good things the late Mzee Moi did.

Baringo Senator Gideon Moi who is the family’s political leader and spokesperson said since their patriarch Mzee Moi went to be with the Lord, they continue to cherish every moment they shared.

“To the country, he was the President; to some, a friend, neighbor, and compatriot; but to me he was a strict yet loving and forgiving father. Today, we honor his memory and rededicate his soul to the Lord,” the Senator said.

Gideon thanked everyone who had stood with the family throughout the trying period saying the family was deeply indebted to  all and remained grateful to the invaluable support they received.

The leaders later laid wreaths at the former late Head of State’s graveside.
