BBI secretariat team presents signature forms to IEBC

The Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) Secretariat today morning submitted more than 3 million signatures to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) for the Constitution of Kenya (Amendment) Bill 2020.
The secretariat ferried the more than 3 million signatures from its Headquarters in Nairobi at Daraja House in two minibuses to IEBC offices at Anniversary Towers.
The secretariat had collected more than 5.2 million signatures but will only submit 3 million to IEBC after it sieved through them and found that 3 million were the only ones that seemed valid.
The signatures were packed in boxes labeled by county.
Speaking during the delivery of the signatures, the secretariat’s co-secretary who is also the Suna East Member of Parliament Junet Mohammed challenged those opposed to the Bill and want amendments to it to forget those ideas and instead join the BBI bandwagon in its quest to change sections of Kenya’s Constitution through the drive.
“The train has left the station. If there is someone who has been left behind, you can take a taxi, a boda boda or something that is motorized and catch us at the next stage,” said Junet.
Kanu Secretary-General Nick Salat who was present offered that they want to go to a referendum that will guarantee them victory. He also echoed Junet’s remarks that the train has left and that there is no turning back.
This comes a day after the High Court dismissed a petition by a voter that had sought to stop the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission from receiving and processing signatures from the Building Bridges Initiative.
The law states that the initiative only requires 1 million signatures of registered voters before the Bill can be taken to the 47 County Assemblies for approval.
It then will require approval by at least 24 County Assemblies.
