The Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) Secretariat is today expected to submit signatures to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission, IEBC, after completing its internal verification process.

The Secretariat’s co-Chair Dennis Waweru says they will be handing over 3 million signatures to IEBC today after sieving them from the 5.5 million appended by Kenyans.

Waweru also says that the Constitution of Kenya (Amendment) Bill 2020 generated from BBI will not be subjected to any amendments.

“There shall be no changes to the Bill by the way of addition or subtraction,” Waweru maintained.

Waweru also discloses that there was an agreement to the effect that the Bill will not be subjected to any further amendments.

This comes after the high court declined to stop IEBC from verifying the signatures following a suit by a Kenyan voter in the diaspora.

The other co-chair of the Secretariat, Suna East Member of Parliament dismissed those calling for further amendments to the bill terming them ‘busybodies’.

“We want to tell off busybodies saying there is a committee seeking to amend the Bill. As the Secretariat, we are not aware of anything like that,” he said.

It will be interesting to see how Deputy President William Ruto will handle the matter as he has always wanted some sections of the Bill amended.

The law states that the initiative only requires 1 million signatures of registered voters before the Bill can be taken to the 47 County Assemblies for approval.

It then will require approval by at least 24 County Assemblies.
