Bright pupil turns to hawking due to lack of school fees

The ambition of a girl to become a medical physician has been scuttled due to lack of fees to enroll in a secondary school.      

Former pupil at a community primary school in Nyali constituency, Mombasa county, sat for Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) in 2022 and managed to score 310 points but has resorted to hawking due to lack of school fees to continue with her education.    

Dorine Mwadzoya who is suffering from sickle cell anemia said she could not report to Kibirgwi girls secondary school in Kirinyaga county due to lack of school fees.

She said her dream is to become a physician when she completes her education to give back to society. 

“I have resolved to do hawking to secure school fees to be able to continue with my education,” she pointed out.        

Dorine sent a passionate appeal to well wishers to come to her rescue and support her to enable her continue with her education.

She was addressing the media at Frere Town ward in Mombasa county.   

The 15-year old former pupil at Brigde Idea Academy and the second born in a family where the first born had succumbed to the disease she is suffering from is still at home pondering her next move.   

Dorine pointed out she was supposed to report to the secondary school but she is unable to.

She told journalists she has explored all avenues to at least continue with her education but she has never succeeded.    

“At one stage my father had  gone to seek for bursary assistance but he never succeeded,” she added.  

The former pupil from a community school has reiterated her appeal to well wishers not to despair in her but to assist her get best education.

Dorine told journalists she had faced a lot of challenges at her age as she lost her mother in 2017 at 11 years old.

She added they are two siblings under the care of their father who struggles to make ends meet as a casual worker.

“The family is living from hand to mouth especially during these hard economic times,” she stated.

Her father, Huxley Mwadzoya, said he has tried his level best for her daughter to pursue her education but he has been unable.

He said despite joining forces with her daughter to secure her a scholarship they have not succeeded.

“My income is low and we are at the mercy of well wishers,” he pointed out.
