Communities Urged to Put Women on the Frontline in Development Issues

Environment and Forestry Cabinet Secretary Keriako Tobiko has called on communities in Nasaru Olosho to form conservancies to maximize on the benefits of tourism.

The CS said the move will help the communities benefit financially from wildlife resources as well as promote healthy ecosystems that support wildlife, livestock and human needs.

The move will also improve the conditions of degraded areas and minimize invasive species; to ensure adequate supply of water for wildlife, people and livestock.

The CS spoke today in Lendorko Primary School where he handed over the certificate of registration and the Constitution to Nasaru Olosho Trust “This certificate of incorporation signed by the Cabinet Secretary for Lands and Physical Planning makes the activities of your organization legal in Kenya”.

The CS urged the community to put women in the forefront of development projects including bee hives adding that empowering women is empowering the community.

The CS said the government in conjunction with World Wildlife Fund have sunk boreholes and installed 50,000 litres water tank in the County to address water shortage as well as fencing of seven schools in Kenyawa to ward off wildlife from interfering with learning in schools.

The CS said Lendorko Primary School will be included in the list of another eleven schools earmarked for fencing.

The CS led state agencies under the Ministry of Environment and Forestry to donate 330 beehives, four water tanks with a capacity of 10,000 litres each, computer for learners worth Ksh300,000, 151 balls (handball, footballs and netball),10,080 sanitary towels.

The Ministry of Environment and Forestry, NEMA Kenya, NETFUND, KFS, NECC, NET donated the items to the schools and communities, KEFRI will train the communities on establishment of tree nurseries.

Former MP David Ole Sankori, Poka/Kenyawa MCA Henry Kimiti, NEMA and NECC Board members led by their Chairpersons Eric Mungai, and Dr Nyaberi Lumumba, KFS Commandant Alex Lemarkoko, NET Secretary Belinda Akello attended the meeting.
