Drugs menace major challenge in coast region

There is urgent need to ensure drug addicts undergo rehabilitation to become useful members of the society.

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s spouse Dorcas Wanjiku said the government is determined to find a lasting solution to the drugs menace in the region.

She pointed out that one of the major steps the government has put in place is to ensure drug addicts are rehabilitated  to feel part and parcel of the society.

“Upon the completion of their rehabilitation the government will ensure they are enrolled in a training course,” she added.

Dorcas pointed out the government will enroll them in Vocational and Technical Training Programmes to acquire skills.

She was addressing the media at Miritini Rehabilitation Centre in Jomvu constituency, Mombasa county.

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s spouse said it will be work in futile to allow them back to frustration after they complete their rehabilitation.

Dorcas, who was flanked by National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse [NACADA] board chairperson Rev [Dr] Stephen Kiptoem Mairori, defended the government program to enroll them to acquire skills to enable them seek self employment.

She told the media that after undergoing the government program the rehabilitated drug addicts will have the advantage of being employed in ongoing affordable housing projects.

“That is the only way the government can succeed in dealing with the drugs menace,” she emphasized.

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s spouse said the government will give them tools for self employment upon completion of the training.

Dorcas said the government will come up with a program to embrace back the addicts into the society.

She told the media she had a one on one with the drug addicts who told her they are ready to change their lifestyle as as long as they get opportunity for self employment.

“The government is on the right path to win in the war against the drugs menace,” she pointed out.
