The government is satisfied with the manner in which Equity Bank Kenya has identified children who have benefited from the Elimu scholarship award program.

Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha said during his fact finding tour that the children who got the scholarship deserved it.

He added that those who qualify for the scholarship are placed under government care to ensure they join a suitable learning institution.

He said the government already caters for those learning in day schools who are 73 percent at the capitation rate of Sh 23,000 per child.

Magoha said it is pointless for a child to win a good scholarship program and not be in a proper learning institution.

He spoke during his mission to inspect the progress of Elimu Scholarship awards program at Bangladesh slums area in Jomvu constituency, Mombasa county.

The CS said the government has directed all children under the program to be enrolled in boarding schools where everything is catered for.

Magoha lauded the program which the government is undertaking to ensure those who get the scholarship deserved it.

He pointed out his tour is in line with President Uhuru Kenyatta’s instruction to ensure the Elimu scholarship award program is spread to slums.

“The Head of State wants to ensure students in slums also benefited from the scholarship program as long as they deserved it,” he pointed out.

The CS said the government targets 9000 children with 3000 drawn from urban slums and informal settlements.

Magoha disclosed out of the 3000 children from urban slums 63 come from the Bangladesh slums area within the constituency.
