The 40 model is now at the bottom of the 2022 Q5 selection, with prices starting at $44,495 – a $100 rise over the base model of the 2021 Q5.

This new base model features a turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four engine with 201 horsepower and 236 pound-feet of torque, as opposed to the Q5 45’s version with 261 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque.

The 45 is still available, but the more powerful engine is now $2600 more expensive than previously, starting at $46,995—a $2600 premium over last year.

This new base Q5 40 configuration, like the 45, comes standard with all-wheel drive and a seven-speed automatic transmission and is available in Premium, Premium Plus, and Prestige trim levels.

It is not offered with the swoopier Sportback body type of the Q5, which comes standard with the 45 powerplant. A 2021 Q5 45 we tested reached 60 mph in 5.5 seconds and ran the quarter mile in 14.2 seconds at 97 mph.

While we haven’t had a chance to test a Q5 40, we can expect it to be a few ticks slower on those parameters.

The EPA fuel-economy figures for the two engines are practically comparable, although the 40 has a 1-mpg advantage on the interstate.
