Kananu takes over running of Nairobi as Mutura hands over

Despite the fact that Ann Kananu Mwenda took office officially as the Nairobi County Deputy Governor, the Governor seat will still remain vacant until further notice.

This is after acting Governor Benson Mutura on Monday officially handed over to Kananu three days after she was sworn in as Deputy Governor.

Mutura on Monday officially handed over the instruments of power to Kananu in a ceremony at City Hall saying that since Nairobi now has a substantive Deputy Governor in office he has relinquished his acting Governor capacity and resumes his full duties as Speaker.

Pressed to answer questions from journalists whether she will now fully take over as acting governor since Mutura had given her the instrumets of power to run the county, Kananu maintained that she had only been sworn in as Deputy Governor and the rest will fall in place as days go by.

The remarks from her mean that she will only be a Deputy Governor and that she will not be acting as Governor till the assumption committee decides so in the near future.

“I am not a politician, and I will not start being one. I’m focused on bringing a new spirit of cooperation, collaboration, partnership and mutual respect with all organs of government. Nairobi is now back on course,” Kananu said.

Kananu offered that her work was clearly cut out and will focus on building the visible achievements as seen in the last few months.

She reiterated that she wil remain driven by the vision and understanding of a whole government approach to service delivery.

Her remarks however centered on admitting that she now takes over as ‘Governor’ despite dilly dallying around the same.

Kilimani ward MCA, Moses Ogetto who was present during the handover ceremony at City Hall maintained that Nairobi has no Governor as at now.

He clarified that according to the law, Kananu will only be Deputy Governor despite Mutura handing over the intruments of power to run the county to her until when maybe she is sworn in as Governor in the near future.
