KPA Invests Sh1.4 Billion on a New Tug-Boarts

The Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) has acquired a new state-of-the-art Azimuth Stern Drive (ASD) tugboat built by Turkish company Med Marine in collaboration with the Kenya Shipyards Limited at a cost of 1.4 billion shillings.

The newest marine craft, MV Pate, was received with pomp and colour and celebration at the Dockyard jetty at the port of Mombasa in Mombasa county.

Speaking during the reception ceremony KPA acting Managing Director Amb. John Mwangemi said this is yet another feather in the cap of the authority that sets the Authority firmly on course to achieving operational excellence in the cargo operations.

He said the acquisition of the new tugboat is part of the authority’s development agenda grounded on a detailed strategic plan and roadmap.

“The roadmap that guides us to anticipate the emerging industry needs of the future is based on maritime trade trends and market needs,” he pointed out.

The KPA boss added that one of the authority’s strategies was the need to develop the second commercial port in Lamu.

Mwangemi pointed out the Lamu port has been operational since May last year following the operationalization of the first berth.

He added that berth two and three have also been completed making the port one of the most modern infrastructure projects in the continent.

“The three expansive berths each has a depth of 17.5 metres and a length of 400 metres,” he said.

On his part, the board of directors chairman Major General (Rtd.) Joseph Kibwana said the newly acquired facility will be commissioned at a later date at the port of Lamu.

He disclosed the delivery of newly acquired tugboat is a step in the right direction.

“The vessel, which has the capacity to handle port operations for all kinds and sizes of vessels safely, efficiently, and effectively, gives us a sigh of relief. Her arrival is timely for the Port of Lamu,” he said.
