Education Cabinet Secretary Prof. George Magoha, has apologised on behalf of the government for the early closure of schools.

Speaking after launching the newly built CBC classes at Umoja secondary school in Eldoret, Magoha said the move was to ensure early preparations for elections by IEBC.

Magoha further affirmed that he takes into consideration the welfare of the children especially at this transition period.

“Following consultation, I hereby convey the Government’s decision on the immediate closure of all basic education institutions from Tuesday, August 2 until Wednesday, August 10 to ensure that preparations and conduct of upcoming elections is carried out seamlessly,” CS Magoha said in a statement on Monday.

This was contradictory to his earlier statement, where he said that schools will be closed on August 6 – August 15 to pave way for the General Election.

The short notice on school closure sparked outrage from parents and stakeholders from the learning institutions, who argued that they were not prepared for the sudden closure.
