Rainforest Alliance has initiated a programme namely Mount Kenya sustainable landscape and livelihoods programme (MSuLLI) in Kirinyaga and Embu Counties geared towards employment creation to Women and youth.
The programme is introducing meaningful, yet less costly enterprises that is insect farming -Black solder fly & cricket, apiculture, vertical farming and green energy. The identified value chains are promoted from inception, production, product development all the way to the market.
For the success of the programme, MSuLLI has partnered with MSEA among other Government institutions. MSEA is coming in to provide enterprise development expertise, provide working space within Constituency industrial development centres (CIDCs) and worksite.
MSEA Regional Head for Embu and Tharaka Nithi Edward Munoru says:
“To start with, we have narrowed down on black solder fly and apiculture. The first cohort on BSF was trained at ICIPE in December last year and the second cohort is joining on 30th January 2023 fully sponsored.
On apiculture MSuLLI has identified two potential buyers of honey in huge volumes and a sustainable way, we will be sensitizing farmers within Embu early February ,2023 to leverage on the opportunity.
