NDI, IEA challenge Govt, National Assembly toact on debts

The National Democratic Institute (NDI) and the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA) are working together to implement a program on Financial Accountability and Transparency.

The Institute of Economic Affairs is in the process of carrying out an analysis of the national government spending fiscal reporting.

IEA has so far completed the analysis of Quarter 2 and 3 of FY 2020/21 budget implementation and review reports.

The findings, evidence and recommendations generated from the analysis will be used for engagement with various accountability actors.

On Tuesday, NDI and IEA HELD an in person meeting that brought together media personalities to deliberate on the findings and recommendations of the analysis.

The meeting resolved that there is need to track and monitor economic recovery strategies with The National Treasury challenged to strengthen revenue forecasting capacity to improve predictability of public funds.

The government purse custodians was also asked to deliver on the Fiscal Consolidation Strategy of at most 3% budget deficit and spearhead prudent spending and cut of wasteful and/or non-priority expenditures.

On its part, The National Assembly was challenged to ensure that review and implement recommendations in Public Audits and deliver on the Fiscal Consolidation Strategy

The National Government was implored upon to develop a contingency plan to address a potential economic shocks and negotiate to stretch maturity of large debts.
